Jil Sander Spring 2011 Collection

Strangely, not a "Burnt Sienna" in the bunch.

Jil Sander has always been about bold shapes and colors but this time they took it to another level, dumping out a crayon box on the runway and offering up some unusual silhouettes. Some of the looks are very minimalist yet very powerful in their simplicity and elegance. Jil Sander's Raf Simon says “Everyone is in a tiny cocktail dress and extreme shoes. I’d be much more interested in seeing a girl in a ten-euro T-shirt and a couture skirt.” Well, with this collection, you can pick up both the t-shirt and the skirt, although we doubt anything is going to be in the ten-euro range. The skirts and dresses are voluminous, bordering on caftan-y at a couple of points. We salute the use of color but looking at this collection has us wondering if there's such a thing as too much color in one collection. If you use every crayon in the box, you're making less of a statement than if you choose your colors carefully. Confucius said that. Maybe.

At any rate, it's an interesting collection that challenges ideas about shape and silhouette as well as color. There's definitely some chic pieces here, but overall the effect is a little flat. Color, yes. But texture and pattern shouldn't be overlooked either.
