John Galliano Spring 2011 Collection

The Stars of the Silent Screen in Living Color.

John Galliano's shows have become more and more theatrical with every season, so it's only natural that he'd turn to an actress as his latest muse. In typical Galliano fashion, it's someone most of us have never heard of. Maria Lani was an actress in Paris in the 20s who convinced artists such as Matisse, Léger, and Chagall to paint her portrait under the pretext that she was going to use them in her upcoming movie. Then she sold all the paintings and ran away to America. We don't know her, but we love her already. Of course Galliano would find her an irresistible muse; she embodies beauty, art, self-promotion and the ability to con people into giving her what she wants. If that's not a metaphor for the fashion world, what is?

As for the clothes, it's another amazing collection of colorful, pre-Jazz Age, feminine looks, topped off silent movie makeup and hair. We love the colors, the asian prints, the multi-colored tiered ruffles, among other things. It's a little hard to whittle it down because Galliano himself never whittles it down. "Editing" is simply not a consideration. As always, each look is piled high with elements and we could spend all day just picking out the pieces here and there that we love the most. He always gives you plenty to look at.
